A First Communion is an important religious event but also a day to celebrate. It is a sacred rite of passage but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun on that day! In this blog you will read tips and tricks for hosting a fun First Communion celebration.
What exactly is a First Communion?
When your child has his or hers First Communion, it means that his/hers decision to follow the teachings of the Catholic Church is celebrated. This is also the first time that your child gets to eat the Bread of Life, also known as a “host”. Hosts are made out of wheat. It is also the first time they drink wine from the Cup of Life. Usually, the ceremony is held during a normal Sunday Mass. Sometimes a procession of all the First Communicants is being held afterwards.
What to wear?
A First Communion is the perfect event to dress elegant and fancy. Boys usually wear a dark suit, with dark shoes and a dark tie. For girls, a white dress is the most common choice. There are many different styles when in comes to First Communion dresses, but the most appropriate is a dress with sleeves. To give the look an extra sophisticated touch, the communicant could wear a veil, tiara, flower crown or headband. Sometimes the girl also has a small white purse to match the outfit. The shoes are often closed-toe and white, and socks or stockings are white as well. The white accentuates the purity of the child.
How to celebrate?
Even though this day is a perfect day to throw a party, you should keep in mind that the most important thing is your child receiving his/hers first communion. It’s a sacred gathering of friends and family in the church. Of course, you can celebrate this day afterwards at home. To keep things in perspective, we recommend keeping the party ‘simple’. Serve your guests easy-food, such as BBQ, hamburgers, hotdogs and finger food. This way this day will not be too stressful for yourself either ;). Organise a few fun games to keep the children entertained. When you have enough space, you could rent a bouncy castle.
Another great (symbolic) thing to do is to put your child’s birth candle together with the First Communion candle on a (Sweet) table. Put a framed picture of your child next to it, to accentuate the Holy meaning of this day. Decorate it with flowers and smaller candles for a beautiful look.
Have fun organising your child’s First Communion party!
